Willpower and What It Really Takes to Quit
For as long as we’ve been in business, we’ve always said the same thing: if you can quit nicotine cold turkey, that’s the best option. Nothing is healthier than simply breathing clean air.
That belief hasn’t changed. We’ve never viewed vaping as “healthy,” and we’ve never wanted people to become lifelong vapor users. From the very beginning, we’ve seen vapor products as a harm reduction tool...something that may help some adults move away from cigarettes or nicotine when quitting outright hasn’t worked.
So why would a vape shop tell you that?
Because after nearly two decades of helping people, we’ve learned something that challenged our own assumptions: Quitting nicotine isn’t just about willpower.
Now, don’t get us wrong, willpower absolutely matters. Every successful quit attempt starts with someone making the decision that they’re ready for a change. But if willpower were the only ingredient, we wouldn’t have spent the last 16.5 years talking to so many people who genuinely wanted to quit and simply couldn’t make it stick.
Over the years, we’ve heard countless versions of the same story. “I’ve quit three times.” “I made it six months.” “I threw everything away, but then one stressful week sent me right back.” These weren’t people who lacked determination. They were people fighting an addiction while also trying to change habits, routines, stress responses, and social behaviors that had developed over years.
That’s why we don’t think the question should be, “Do I have enough willpower?” A better question is, “How can I give my willpower the best chance to succeed?”
For some people, the answer really is cold turkey. We know many people who’ve quit that way, and we’ll always encourage it as the healthiest path if it’s something you can do.
But we’ve also met many others who succeeded by taking a different route.
Years ago, those conversations were usually with smokers who wanted to leave cigarettes behind. Today, they’re just as likely to be with someone who’s trying to stop using high-strength disposable vapes. In fact, some of our customers at this point never smoked cigarettes at all. They started with disposable nicotine salt devices, and now they’re finding that quitting a 50mg disposable is much harder than they ever expected.
The products have changed, but the challenge hasn’t. People want to regain control over nicotine.
That’s one reason our mission has evolved over the years. While we still help smokers move away from combustible cigarettes, we now spend just as much time helping people transition away from closed-system (disposable) devices. Not because we think everyone should vape, but because we’ve seen firsthand that some people do better when they have the right tools and a plan, instead of relying on determination alone.
An open-system device isn’t a magic solution, and it doesn’t replace willpower. What it does offer is flexibility. It allows someone to choose a nicotine strength that fits where they are today and, if they choose, gradually reduce that strength over time. Instead of trying to break every part of the addiction at once, they can focus on—quite literally—one step at a time by reducing their nicotine level as they’re ready.
We’ve watched that approach work for many people over the years. Many customers eventually quit vaping altogether. Others reduce their nicotine to a fraction of what they once used before. Every journey looks a little different, and that’s okay. We're here to help our customer's with whatever personal goal they have with nicotine.
Summer is often a reminder of just how difficult those journeys can be. Time with friends, camping trips, concerts, patios, vacations, and backyard bonfires can all bring back old habits. Even people who have made great progress can find themselves tempted when nicotine becomes part of a social setting again. That’s not a sign that you’ve failed. It’s simply a reminder that quitting isn’t only physical, it’s behavioral, too.
If you’ve tried to quit before and it didn’t last, don’t assume you lack willpower. You may simply need a different strategy, better education, more support, or tools that fit your goals.
Our goal has never been to create lifelong customers. In fact, some of our favorite and most fulfilling conversations happen when someone walks back into the store just to tell us they don’t need us anymore.
Whether your goal is to quit smoking, move away from disposable vapes, reduce your nicotine intake, or quit nicotine altogether, we’re here to help you build a plan that gives your willpower the best possible chance to succeed. And if your journey ends with nothing more than fresh air, we’ll be the first ones to congratulate you. That is the Smokeless Difference.
